The Unbuilt Cyberspace
A personal journey through the architectural imagination of digital space.
Before Anahera, there was a generation of architects imagining a world that had not yet been built.
There was a time when cyberspace was still a strange word.
The internet was young. Screens were small. Graphics hardware was expensive. Virtual reality was mostly experimental. Yet architects were already asking a radical question:
What happens to architecture when the space itself becomes information?
I was drawn to that question.
When architecture left the ground
Traditional architecture begins with gravity.
Walls stand.
Floors support.
Roofs shelter.
Doors separate one space from another.
But digital space has no gravity.
It does not need a foundation.
It can bend, dissolve, duplicate, transform and respond.
This was one of the ideas behind Marcos Novak's writing on liquid architecture: architecture conceived specifically for cyberspace, liberated from many of the physical constraints that had shaped architecture for centuries.
Novak's work suggested that cyberspace could be more than a digital copy of the physical world.
It could have its own architecture.
Its own geometry.
Its own logic.
Its own experience of movement.
Asymptote: information becomes space
Around the same period, Asymptote was exploring the boundary between architecture, technology and virtual environments.
Their work was especially important to me because it demonstrated something concrete:
information could be spatialized.
The 3D Trading Floor for the New York Stock Exchange is a striking example.
Instead of treating market information as only charts, tables and numbers, the project conceived real-time financial activity as a navigable three-dimensional environment.
Data acquired spatial form.
Patterns could be encountered as landscape.
Movement became part of understanding.
The screen was no longer merely a surface displaying information.
It became a window into an environment.
The Virtual Guggenheim pushed another possibility.
Rather than simply putting a conventional museum online, Asymptote conceived a digital environment whose architecture could exist only in the virtual domain – a place to navigate through rather than simply a collection of pages to click.
The internet could be treated as an architectural medium.
That idea stayed with me.
The promise
The promise of cyberspace architecture was not simply that computers could produce beautiful forms.
It was more fundamental.
Space could become an interface.
Instead of:
information → screen → reading
there could be:
information → space → navigation → understanding
This was a different way of thinking about digital information.
A place could have orientation.
Proximity could have meaning.
Movement could reveal relationships.
Scale could reveal different levels of detail.
A landscape could show patterns that a list might hide.
And then the web became flat
Something unexpected happened.
The technology improved enormously.
Graphics became faster.
Networks became ubiquitous.
Browsers became incredibly capable.
But much of the web settled into a surprisingly persistent visual language.
Pages.
Windows.
Tabs.
Menus.
Lists.
Folders.
Feeds.
Search.
The interface became more sophisticated, but the metaphor remained largely two-dimensional.
The spatial imagination of early cyberspace did not disappear.
It simply moved to the margins.
Games pursued virtual worlds.
VR pursued immersion.
3D visualization pursued simulation.
But everyday information work – the millions of things we read, save, compare and return to every day – remained mostly flat.
That is the unfinished part that interests me.
The question survived
I don't think the early cyberspace architects were wrong.
I think they were early.
The hardware and networks of their time made many of their ideas difficult to realize as everyday environments.
Today, the conditions are different.
A browser can render complex spatial systems in real time.
A laptop can hold an enormous amount of information.
A web page can become interactive space.
And the data we accumulate about our own attention can become part of the environment.
The possibility is no longer hypothetical.
Anahera
Anahera is not an attempt to recreate the cyberspace visions of the 1990s.
It is an attempt to continue their question.
What happens when the information already surrounding us – the pages we visit, the things we save, the ideas we collect – is allowed to become spatial?
What if a browser history could have geography?
What if clusters could become districts?
What if recency could become heat?
What if relationships could become lines?
What if time could become something we could navigate?
What if the interface stopped behaving like a filing system and started behaving like a landscape?
That is the territory I am exploring with Anahera.
The cyberspace of the 1990s was largely imagined.
Anahera is an attempt to make one small piece of that imagination ordinary.
A lineage, not a replica
Anahera does not claim to complete the work of Novak, Asymptote, or anyone else.
Those works belong to their own histories.
What they gave me was something more personal:
permission to think of information spatially.
That idea became part of my architectural imagination.
Decades later, it found a new medium.
A browser.
And a landscape made of things I actually care about.
